17 Years Later, Carrie Underwood Pays Heartbreaking Tribute to a Country Legend

Back in 2008, country music legend Randy Travis shocked Carrie Underwood onstage with an invitation to be part of the Grand Ole Opry. Seventeen years later, during the 100th celebration of the Opry, Underwood has repaid the favor by singing directly to Travis in a heartwrenching, utterly beautiful performance.

During the festivities, Underwood—who won American Idol in 2005—performed a tribute to the country songs of Randy Travis, specifically the tunes “Three Wooden Crosses” and “Forever and Ever, Amen.”

This was particularly touching because, since 2013, Travis has been recovering from both heart failure and a stroke. Initially, this rendered him incapable of singing or speaking, but by 2016, he was able to sing “Amazing Grace” at ceremonies for the Country Music Hall of Fame.

On March 19, during Opry 100: A Live Celebration, Underwood completed her Travis tribute by going directly into the audience, and having Travis sing the last “Amen” in the song “Forever and Ever, Amen.” Needless to say, both the audience in attendance and people watching at home burst into tears.

Underwood’s love of Travis’s music goes way back. In addition to him inviting her into the family of the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, Underwood famously covered the Travis song “I Told You So” just one year prior, in 2007. That song, initially recorded by Travis in 1987, went on to become one of Underwood’s best-loved singles.

In 2024, earlier this year, Travis released new music—including the songs “Where That Came From” and “Horses in Heaven”—both of which employed AI-driven voice-cloning technology to augment his diminished singing abilities.

You can stream Opry 100: A Live Celebration, which aired on March 19, 2025, on Peacock now.
