Four Downs: Quinn Ewers made the right decision, Texas football’s NFL approach, Ryan Watts and more

AUSTIN, Texas — Here’s the latest edition of “Four Downs” following a week on the Forty Acres that saw plenty of action on the field and just as much off of it.

This week’s column spotlights Quinn Ewers’ making the right decision despite what pundits may say, Texas fans’ appreciation of winners, Steve Sarkisian running the Longhorns like a professional franchise and much more.

First Down: Quinn Ewers made the right decision

Okay, y’all.

This is going to be the final time I write about now-former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, outside of him being recognized by the program in the future or his play in the NFL.

I’m beyond frustrated and to be quite frank, disappointed, at some of the conversation around Ewers’ being selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

Let’s take this piece by piece.

Following Ewers’ selection, an Ohio-based sports reporter posted a tweet that read ‘Is this the biggest misevaluation of the moder recruiting era’ – with a screenshot of Ewers’ 247Sports recruiting profile where he was rated as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2021 class.

Deep sigh…exhale.

Are you kidding me?

Yes, assigning a five-star ranking for a player means the expectation is that they will be a first-round pick by the time their collegiate career is over – which Ewers obviously fell short of being.

However, Ewers isn’t even the only five-star in his class to fall short of their five-star billing. The No. 3 rated player in Korey Foreman has recorded 49 tackles and 5.5 sacks over four seasons with USC and Fresno State.
