Bill Belichick has broken his silence days after his interview on CBS Sunday Morning went viral over the weekend.

In a statement released by the University of North Carolina, Belichick pushed back against the interview conducted by CBS — stating that what aired a “selectively edited’ final cut that pushed a “false narrative” about both the Tar Heels head football coach and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.

Here is Belichick’s full statement:

“I agreed to speak with CBS Sunday Morning to promote my new book, ‘The Art of Winning – Lessons from My Life in Football.’ Prior to this interview, I clearly communicated with my publicist at Simon & Schuster that any promotional interviews I participated in would agree to focus solely on the contents of the book.

“Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview. I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep the conversation centered on the book. After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion. She was not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track. Some of the clips make it appear as though we were avoiding the question of how we met, but we have been open about the fact that Jordon and I met on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021.

“The final eight-minute segment does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative – that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation – which is simply not true.”

Just hours after Belichick’s statement was posted, the CBS News PR team posted its own response — defending its editorial standards.

Here is the statement from a CBS News spokesperson:

“When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview. There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.”

The interview quickly made the rounds on the internet — and served as a punchline on late-night TV — after Belichick was asked about his relationship with the 24-year-old Hudson.

“How did you guys meet,” CBS interviewer Tony Dokoupil asked Belichick.

“We’re not talking about this,” Hudson interjected, with cameras catching her watching the taping to the side.

Dokoupil followed up, “No?” To which Hudson replied, “No.”

There has been plenty of fallout following Sunday’s interview, with several reports painting the picture of what was a dramatic taping at Chapel Hill.

According to TMZ, Hudson interrupted CBS’s interview on multiple occasions, with the outlet reporting that at one point Hudson walked out of the taping, delaying the interview for about half an hour.

“We’re told outside of that baffling moment that made the final edit, there were numerous other instances of Hudson butting in — even when the legendary coach was answering questions about football, she would stop and correct him,” TMZ wrote.

The TMZ report also said that the University of North Carolina might be expressing some unease about the entire sequence of events — as well as Hudson’s influence.

“The whole ordeal also isn’t sitting well with Bill’s employers — we’re told folks at UNC are now concerned about Hudson’s influence on Belichick’s tenure as the head football coach in Chapel Hill … especially with her, essentially, taking on a role as his manager,” TMZ wrote. “As a source put it, there’s a “growing sense this could become a problem.”

On Tuesday, Hudson posted on Instagram a screenshot of an email from Belichick earlier this month that bemoaned the media coverage of his book: “The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football”.

Hudson teased in the Instagram post of a “full statement to be released later today” — with no statement posted until Belichick’s comments via UNC the following afternoon.
