Today, May 4, marks “Star Wars Day” for fans of the popular outer space media franchise.
The informal holiday is based on the iconic catchphrase “May the Force be with you.” While the day has been commemorated in different ways over the years, the first official “Star Wars Day” celebration is believed to have been held in Toronto in 2011.
“I think it’s a very clever way for fans to celebrate their passion and love for ‘Star Wars’ once a year,” said Steve Sansweet, founder and executive chairman of Rancho Obi-Wan, a “Star Wars” nonprofit museum in California.
On this May 4, the official “Star Wars” X/Twitter account shared a message to fans, urging them to watch some of the classic titles in the series.
“Celebrating across the galaxy. Happy May the 4th. Watch The Phantom Menace, Return of the Jedi & The Rise of Skywalker streaming on @DisneyPlus,” the tweet reads.
Disney+ is also launching the new “Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld” today, and “Star Wars Day” falls after the announcement of a new film installment of the franchise starring Ryan Gosling, set to release in 2027.
“Star Wars: Starfighter,” directed by Shawn Levy, will debut in May 2027.
“The film… is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen,” said Lucasfilm in a statement last month.
The second season of “Andor” will also be released next week, so this is an exciting time for fans of George Lucas’ iconic franchise.
Meanwhile, on social media, prominent celebrities like William Shatner and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Major League Baseball and the Boston Celtics are also celebrating the occasion Sunday.
