Thunderbolts* surprised viewers thanks to its heartfelt story and how well this group of unexpected heroes ended up working together, but there was one major surprise at the end of the film that is now being revealed to the rest of the world. The new team at the center of this movie isn’t actually called the Thunderbolts…in fact, that asterisk was a big hint of what was coming up next. Marvel is now introducing the New Avengers, although there’s a chance that name might not stick. Ready to find out more about this new group?
Here’s everything you need to know about the New Avengers.
So, wait, the Thunderbolts are now the New Avengers?
Yes, sort of…
In real life, Marvel has started replacing some of the original Thunderbolts* posters with new ones that mention the New Avengers.
And they even have the one and only Sebastian Stan doing some overtime as well…
At the end of Thunderbolts*, Valentine tricks the team into a impromptu press conference where she officially declares that they are the New Avengers. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, nope not really. Cause this is Marvel and declaring a new group isn’t just something you can do.
Why is their name controversial?
In the end credit scene, we find out that the team is having a bit of a problem with the name. While Valentina might have named them that, they actually don’t have the rights to use the Avengers as their official team name. The person who does? Sam Wilson AKA Captain America. And he is actually suing them for copyright infringement. Despite his efforts to talk to his friend, Bucky cannot seem to convince him to let them use the name.
The group is still trying to figure out their official name, with Alexei even recommending them using a z at the end instead of an s to allow them to still use the name, but obviously, that’s not going to work.

Who is part of the New Avengers?
Right now the leader of the New Avengers is Bucky Barnes, while the other members are: Yelena Belova, John Walker / U.S. Agent, Ava Starr / Ghost, and Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian. Bob Reynolds / Sentry is sort of part of the team, but hasn’t been using his powers due to what happened with the Void. Because of this, the movie ends with “The New Avengers and Bob will return,” instead of keeping him as part of the group.
