Numerous insider reports, screenshots accidentally made public by Virtuos, and now Xbox giving us a concrete release date to look forward to – the sheer volume of leaks and discoveries made in April can almost make you think – tinfoil hat time – this might not be coincidence at all, but rather a deliberate move by Microsoft to build hype without spending a dime.

After all, when the only clues about an Oblivion remake or remaster were scattered insider reports and leaked documents, some people wondered if Microsoft would really risk it shadow-dropping a game as iconic and beloved as Oblivion. And judging by how things are playing out, with the remaster stealing headlines and dominating the conversation, they just might, and all without a single dollar spent on marketing.

That’s all to say that, as of now, neither Microsoft, Bethesda, nor Virtuos has officially confirmed the remaster’s existence or its release date. But if the goal was indeed to let the community do the promotional heavy lifting, hats off to all three, because it’s definitely working.
