Paige Bueckers, the Connecticut standout who eight days ago capped a stellar college career with a national championship, was selected by the Dallas Wings with the No. 1 pick Monday night at the WNBA draft in New York.
The three-time all-American guard helped the Huskies end a nine-year title drought with an 82-59 win in last week’s championship game against South Carolina.
A Minnesota native, Bueckers broke out in the basketball world as a middle-schooler and headed to Connecticut as the country’s top recruit in a class that included future stars such as Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. She was named national player of the year as a freshman and became one of the most recognized players in the college game, reaching four Final Fours in five seasons. She finished her Huskies career ranked third in points, trailing only Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart.
Bueckers joins a Dallas franchise seeking a reboot after it finished 9-31 and missed the playoffs last year.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
