There will be a Clásico in the Copa del Rey final. Barça and Real Madrid are set to play for the trophy at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville on April 26. The semi-finals saw the all-whites go through against Real Sociedad to play their second final in three years whilst in their tie Hansi Flick’s side saw off the challenge of Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey route
Just like the other teams in the Spanish Super Cup, Barça, Athletic, and Mallorca, Real Madrid began their quest for the Copa del Rey in the last 32. A match played in Cartagonova saw the all-whites win resoundingly 0-5 against Deportiva Minera from the Segunda RFEF. The last 16 saw Celta Vigo travel to the Bernabéu stadium to play Real Madrid. There was nothing to choose between them after 90 minutes (2-2), but the home side scored three goals in extra time to go through 5-2.
The quarter-final match wasn’t that easy either. In this case it was Leganés v Madrid at the Butarque stadium. Ancelotti’s side took a 0-2 lead, before a Juan Cruz brace tied things up. When it appeared that the game was heading for extra-time, Real Madrid won the game in time added on, home-grown player Gonzalo García scoring the goal.
Endrick is having a key role in the Copa del Rey for this Real Madrid side, scoring a total of three goals so far. Modric and Valverde have both scored two goals too.
Eighth final
This will be the eighth Copa del Rey final between Barça and Real Madrid. The previous editions saw the all-whites win four and the blaugranes win three. Five of those games in the final came last century, while they have met this century in the 2011 and 2014 Copa del Rey finals, with the all-whites winning both.
