A Minecraft Movie Gets Unsatisfactory Rotten Tomatoes Score & Reviews

Following early buzz, A Minecraft Movie has received mixed reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Jared Hess is the director of the live-action adaptation of the popular sandbox video game, starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black. As it hits theaters, critics point to chaotic humor, an uneven tone, and an overreliance on star power. These elements leave audiences divided on whether it truly captures the spirit of Minecraft.

Critics are divided in A Minecraft Movie’s reviews

A Minecraft Movie received mixed reviews, with critics criticizing its story and humor. Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon gave it a 3/10, describing it as “the cinematic equivalent of digging straight down: a terrible idea that only results in frustration.”

Sim criticized the film for being “loud, obnoxious, and aggressively silly,” noting that while younger fans might enjoy the spectacle, most viewers will find it “exhausting.” Similarly, Radheyan Simonpillai of The Globe and Mail concluded, “A Minecraft Movie is where that creativity goes to die.”

Other critics offered limited praise. Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times likened the film to “a meathead version of The Wizard of Oz,” while Peter Gray of The AU Review noted that “Jack Black and Jason Momoa are the comedic duo we didn’t know we needed.” However, positive takes like these were in the minority.

Robert Kojder of Flickering Myth criticized the film as “it mostly chooses laziness over imagination,” and Ryan Gaur of DiscussingFilm wrote that the movie is “plagued with unrelenting visual issues, many of which wouldn’t be so bad if the film didn’t call attention to them so often.”

A Minecraft Movie gets substandard Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores

A Minecraft Movie holds a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 51 critic reviews. On Metacritic, it has a score of 47 out of 100 based on 22 reviews. The Jared Hess-directorial is written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta based on a story by Allison Schroeder, Bowman, and Palmer.

The PG-rated adventure comedy hits theaters on April 4, 2025. Jason Momoa plays Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Emma Myers, Sebastian Hansen, and Danielle Brooks co-star as Natalie, Henry, and Dawn. The four misfits get pulled through a mysterious portal and enter Minecraft’s Overworld. Jack Black’s energetic expert crafter, Steve, guides them through the Overworld as they search for a way home.
