Five tornadoes confirmed from Saturday, NWS damage survey underway

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has confirmed five tornadoes struck central Alabama on Saturday, as severe storms swept through the region. The NWS is currently assessing damage in 16 areas, a process expected to take several days.

Among the confirmed tornadoes, the Deer Creek Road Tornado was rated EF0, with estimated peak winds of 80 mph. It traveled 7.63 miles through Bibb County, beginning near the Maud Community and lifting near the Oakley Community. No fatalities or injuries were reported.

The Calera Tornado, rated EF1, had estimated peak winds of 90 mph and a path length of 9.70 miles. It caused damage in downtown Calera, including to several mobile homes and campers at a dealership. The tornado weakened as it crossed Limestone Parkway and lifted near County Road 26. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Another EF1 tornado, the Lawler Drive Tornado, also had peak winds of 90 mph and traveled 2.55 miles in Shelby County. It intensified quickly after crossing Highway 25 and ended along Spring Creek Road. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The NWS continues to gather data on the Plantersville Tornado, rated EF3, and the Winterboro Tornado, rated EF2, with details on their paths and impacts still pending.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes based on estimated wind speeds, with EF0 indicating winds of 65 to 85 mph and EF3 indicating winds of 136 to 165 mph.
