I genuinely think 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the rom-com comeback. From Amy Schumer’s hilarious Kinda Pregnant to the heartwarming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, plus Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell teaming up in You’re Cordially Invited, rom-coms are popping up everywhere right now. To be honest, I’ve been craving some good, feel-good rom-com energy lately and it seems like audiences feel the same way too because the number one show on Netflix at the moment? Yep, it’s a rom-com.
Netflix’s The Life List has skyrocketed to the top of the charts less than a week after its release and for good reason. The movie, based on Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel, stars Connie Britton, Sofia Carson and Kyle Allen. The plot centers around Alex (Carson), a woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery after the death of her mother (Britton). To help her process her grief and reconnect with herself, she takes on a list of life goals her mom had her write as a teenager.
It’s the kind of film that has you feeling all the emotions as Alex navigates this second coming-of-age moment and learns to live fully again. It’s a mix of drama, romance and self-reflection.
Viewers on social media are all about it too with rave reviews pouring in, saying things like, “Best movie!” and “I loved this!” One person even commented, “The Life List hits emotionally, and keeps you on the edge.” Another person added, “I loved it! Really well written and acted—very touching!” Some even shared how the film inspired them to create their own life list.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s rocking a 72% rating on the popcorn meter, with, with critics calling it a “cozy, easy-to-enjoy romantic comedy.” While some people admitted it’s “not for everybody,” if you’re a fan of the genre, this is definitely one to add to your watchlist.
