Snow White: Rachel Zegler stars in Disney trailer

Disney’s latest live-action spectacle, Snow White, has been cloaked in controversy long before its release. With a casting uproar and whispers of cast feuds, the film finally graced screens globally on March 21 with many eyes eagerly watching its performance.

Topping the North American box office, Snow White enchanted audiences to the tune of $87.3 million worldwide on its opening weekend. Despite this success, it did not hit the industry’s high expectations, particularly considering its hefty $270 million production budget.

As critics question if the movie will pick up pace or fall from grace, Rachel Zegler shines as Snow White, while Gal Gadot embodies the Evil Queen and Andrew Burnap plays the charming Jonathan, Snow White’s love interest. Fans didn’t shy away from sharing their frank opinions online after the premiere.

One viewer lamented: “It was not good. It has a few cute moments but then a lot of really questionable choices that result in feeling like this was two movies stitched together.”

Comments about garish wardrobe choices and disjointed musical styles also surfaced, including: “The bandits hoody and jeans, Gals 80’s arcade carpet cloaks, the music being so jarringly different. But, your kids will probably like it, so there is that,” reports the Mirror.

Echoing the mosaic of reactions, another Disney devotee shared: “Is it a great movie? No, and it’s still not my bag. It’s very strange that it goes from full on Broadway musical intro to narration.”

A viewer remarked on the film’s eccentric elements: “The film is at its strangest with the bandits and dwarfs. Two narrative directions collide with mediocre interactions. We don’t get enough time with their group this way.

“The magic of Disney’s classics feels lost in translation to live action, and it shows,” they continued, pointing out that “It’s not a completely terrible time but it’s disappointing when Disney’s early masterpieces are average at best with a live action treatment. The best addition would be the Queen destroying herself by breaking the mirror.”

Reportedly, the film has been embroiled in several controversies. Criticism emerged from the dwarf community for the studio’s choice to use computer-generated imagery rather than casting actual actors.

Additionally, there has been discontent regarding the casting of Rachel because she’s of Colombian heritage, diverging from Snow White’s classic portrayal which describes her as having skin “white as snow”. Tensions behind the scenes were also suggested, with speculation about an ongoing rift between Rachel and Gal Gadot owing to their conflicting views on the Israel-Palestine situation; Rachel supporting Palestine while Gal stands with Israel.
