ATLANTA — Rapper Young Scooter died Friday, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed, on the day of his 39th birthday.
According to police Scooter, whose legal name is Kenneth Bailey, sustained injuries to his leg that evidently caused serious bleeding while running from officers who’d responded to a home in Lakewood Heights for a call of a dispute involving a weapon. An exact cause of death has not yet been determined, the medical examiner’s office said Friday.
Scooter was a prolific street rapper who released two dozen mix tapes across the last 13+ years and collaborated with many of the biggest names in Atlanta hip-hop, mostly closely associated with Future and Gucci Mane.
- How did he die? It’s important to be clear about what we know and don’t know on this. The only injury police described was to his leg, perhaps a fracture, that caused bleeding. Atlanta Police said its officers did not fire any shots and that Scooter’s injury “was sustained was not via the officers on scene.” The medical examiner’s office said the cause and manner of death are currently undetermined.
- Why did police respond? Officers responded to the 200 block of William Nye Drive SE in the Lakewood Heights neighborhood. They said a call came in about a dispute involving a weapon. APD Lt. Andrew Smith said initial reports indicated that shots were fired and that a female was dragged back inside the home though it’s not clear if police confirmed any shots were ever fired, and they said they could not find a woman and did not substantiate the report about anyone being dragged into a home.
- Then what happened? Lt. Smith said officers knocked on the door and that a man opened it and “immediately shut the door on the officers.” Lt. Smith added: “During the process of establishing the perimeter, two males fled out of the rear of the house. One male returned back into the house. The other male jumped two fences as he was fleeing. When officers located him on the other side of the fence, he appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg.”
- Confirmation of Young Scooter’s identity: While APD did not confirm Scooter’s identity during a Friday night news conference as the man injured as described above, the medical examiner’s office said Kenneth Bailey had died from the incident, adding that the Grady Marcus Trauma Center reported the death.
- Further details: Little else remains clear as of early Saturday morning. Police said they provided aid at the scene before Scooter was taken to the hospital. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is additionally conducting a death investigation at the request of APD.
