Ex-Red Sox Swiss Army knife joins Shohei Ohtani in Tokyo home run fireworks

The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers closed out their season-opening Tokyo Series with some home run fireworks.

The Dodgers hit three home runs — including the first of the season for Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani — to close out the 2-0 series sweep against the Cubs with a 6-3 win.

Three Dodgers players went deep in Wednesday’s game, which started just after 6 a.m. EDT at the Tokyo Dome. Tommy Edman had one in the third, followed by former Boston Red Sox player Kiké Hernández in the fourth.

Ohtani followed up with a deep shot in the fifth that hit just above the wall. The announcers initially weren’t sure if it was gone — or if a fan had interfered. It was later confirmed by video replay.

It’s little surprise to see Ohtani getting most of the headlines coming out of the Tokyo Series. The three-time MVP and reigning World Series champ is baseball biggest star and playing in front of fans in his home country.

Hernández, for his part, had a quieter series, going 1-for-8 including a home run and 3 RBIs.

A two-time champ with the Dodgers, Hernández has been lining up at third base for L.A. so far this season, continuing his legacy as one of baseball’s most versatile players.

Hernández playing Boston from 2021-2023. His first two seasons, he impressed as a center fielder. Then in 2023, he moved to shortstop to fill a major need at the position after Trevor Story went down with an injury.

The Red Sox traded Hernández back to the Dodgers midway through the 2023 season. He’s now entering his ninth season in L.A., including a six-year run earlier in his career from 2015 to 2020.
