Key Storylines for the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament

  • We have two first-timers in the field as both UConn and Bentley have reached the NCAA men’s hockey tournament for the first time in their programs’ history. UConn got in as an at-large, while Bentley won their first Atlantic Hockey America title to get in.
  • Denver is looking to repeat as champion and extend its record to 11 national titles. They lost in overtime of the NCHC championship, marking a rare loss in a championship game for head coach David Carle.
  • Boston College is on a bit of a revenge tour after falling agonizingly short of the title in last year’s championship game. Sophomore forward Ryan Leonard (WSH) turned down a pro contract last year to stay and try to win the big one with BC.
  • Michigan State’s resurgence under head coach Adam Nightingale has been dramatic, bringing the Spartans back to prominence. They seek their first national title since 2007, which was won in St. Louis.
  • Western Michigan became just the second team in the NCHC’s history to win both the regular-season and postseason championships. The Broncos beat Denver in double-overtime in the NCHC championship game with star Alex Bump (PHI) scoring the equalizer.
  • Cornell made it to the NCAA tournament by winning the ECAC championship, extending the career of head coach Mike Shafer for at least one week. Shafer announced before the season that this would be his last behind the Big Red bench.
  • Penn State eked into the tournament as an at-large thanks to an especially strong second half of the season. The Nittany Lions have been among the hottest teams in the country. If there were upsets in either Hockey East or the NCHC, they could have been left out of the tournament. Let’s see what they do with their second life.
