We’ve got a rare chance to see a total lunar eclipse and a “Blood Moon” tonight.

Why it matters: This is the first total lunar eclipse since 2022 and it’s the only one visible from the U.S. this year.

How it works: A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon align so the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow, according to NASA.

  • Lunar eclipses are sometimes called “Blood Moons” because the Moon will turn a reddish and copper hue, NASA says.

What’s next: It starts around 10:57pm.

If you go: Gretna is hosting a free watch party at its observatory from midnight to 3am. Details.
