Is Zoom down? Users report outages, problems

Zoom, a cloud-based video conferencing platform, is reporting a host of outages as of 3 p.m. ET.

According to the website Downdetector, a website and app that monitors the status of various online services and helps users identify and report outages, there were over 60,000 Zoom outages.

Why It Matters

Zoom became an integral part of companies and the workplace during the 2020 pandemic when offices closed and people needed to be able to work remotely. Workplaces used it as a primary way of connecting employees during the lockdowns and Zoom has become synonymous with all video chatting, kind of like how Kleenex or Band-Aid is with products.

What to Know

Users reported a wide variety of issues. Some people weren’t able to log onto any meetings or get into meetings that were already in place, while others couldn’t access the site. Some people were able to make phone calls through Zoom, but weren’t able to modify their settings.

For some people, the issue was with conference meetings, but messages and voice calls worked fine.

Along with Zoom’s services being down, the website where people can check the status of Zoom’s products was down, as well.

In March 2020, there were about 10 million daily meetings and 200 million participants. Along with businesses, schools moved to Zoom to help kids learn during the pandemic when they weren’t able to be physically in a classroom.

While return-to-office has made Zoom less necessary than it was during the pandemic, companies still rely on the tool to connect remote workers and hold meetings with clients who aren’t in the office.

Zoom’s bread and butter has been video and phone conference meetings, but the company has transitioned out of just being a platform for communicating and into the artificial intelligence space. Intelligent Director uses the company’s software to help connect people who are in a conference room and those who are remote. The AI tool will select the best view of in-room participants from multiple camera sources to help people in hybrid work environments.

Zoom’s outage problems came just hours after a Spotify outage, which left users unable to access the platform.
