LOS ANGELES – Marvel’s Fantastic Four has officially entered a new era—with a multiversal twist.
The studio released the first trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” Thursday, introducing fans to a new version of Marvel’s original superhero team. This time, they’re from another Earth—one without Avengers, but with the same looming threats. At the center of it all: Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer, the herald of Galactus, who arrives with a warning for humanity.
Meet Marvel’s new Fantastic Four
The backstory:
The new lineup features Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.
In the trailer, the team—already established as heroes on their version of Earth—is met by an unexpected visitor: the Silver Surfer, played by Garner. Her arrival signals the coming of Galactus, the cosmic being who consumes entire planets.
Garner, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, joked in advance that her version of Silver Surfer would be “really shiny”—and the trailer confirms she wasn’t exaggerating.
Galactus is coming… but not fully revealed yet
The backstory:
While Galactus doesn’t make a full appearance in the footage, his presence looms large. “Your planet has been marked for death,” Silver Surfer tells the team, setting up the existential threat.
Director Matt Shakman explained to Entertainment Weekly that they chose to bring Galactus to life using practical effects rather than relying entirely on digital motion-capture. British actor Ralph Ineson voices the character, but fans will have to wait a bit longer for a full reveal.
The multiverse and a major Marvel twist
Big picture view:
As previously revealed by Entertainment Weekly, the Fantastic Four in this film aren’t from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Instead, they exist in an alternate reality, where they are the only superheroes on Earth.
In a quieter moment from the trailer, Reed and Sue learn they’re expecting a child—a detail that comic fans will recognize as a possible setup for the introduction of Franklin Richards, a powerful figure in Marvel lore.
When does it hit theaters?
What’s next:
“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” opens July 25 and marks Marvel’s latest attempt to blend cosmic stakes with emotional storytelling.
The trailer teases plenty of action and visual spectacle, but also nods to the family dynamics that have always defined the Fantastic Four—now set against the backdrop of a multiversal threat.
