Fulfilling a promise he made often on the campaign trail, President Donald Trump announced an across-the-board tariff of 10 percent on imported goods Wednesday, as well as additional import taxes on goods from dozens of other countries and territories. Trump also faced the first rebuke from the Senate of his second term, as four GOP lawmakers joined with Democrats to pass a bill Wednesday evening to overturn the president’s tariffs on Canada. Stock markets in Asia and Europe tumbled Thursday, sparked by the steep increase in the tariffs levied against China and the European Union, as well as new duty taxes Trump placed on trading partners including Japan and South Korea. U.S. economists said the American economy could take a hit as the new tariffs are imposed in the coming days.
