NEEDHAM, Mass. —Following a ruling from a federal judge Friday afternoon, which stated that detained Tufts University graduate student Rumeysa Ozturk cannot be deported until that judge decides whether she was lawfully taken into custody, Massachusetts lawmakers are demanding the Trump administration answer questions about her arrest.

“Ozturk shall not be removed from the United States until further Order of this Court,” Judge Denise J. Casper wrote.

On Friday, Ozturk’s lawyers said she had an asthma attack enroute to Louisiana, where she is currently being held, and that her rights are being violated.

In a letter to ICE, the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a group of 28 lawmakers, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, are questioning the arrest and want to know why Ozturk was detained.

“The rationale for this arrest appears to be this student’s expression of her political views. We are calling for full due process in this case and are seeking answers about this case and about ICE’s policy that has led to the identification and arrest of university students with valid legal status,” the group wrote.

During an interview for WCVB’s “On The Record”, which airs on Sunday, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said she has real questions about what led to Ozturk’s arrest, questions that are not being answered by the Trump administration.

“Obviously, the video is disturbing,” Healey said, describing the video footage of Ozturk’s arrest by masked federal agents in Somerville on Tuesday.

“We don’t know the circumstances under which this woman was taken,” Healey said. “We haven’t had any information provided to us by the Department of Homeland Security.”

Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested hundreds of people in Massachusetts.

Healey said she reached out to Donald Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan to try to talk to him.

“I just wanted to have an actual conversation about what their actual plan was,” Healey said. “I’m somebody who is very familiar with investigating and prosecuting bad guys away and if that’s what you’re looking to do then work with us on that.”

Homan said they picked up mostly criminals, adding there were many collateral arrests.

Healey said she has questions.

‘We don’t know anything about who they took, so there are numbers offered, but we’ve seen no substantiation,” Healey said.

Healey insisted that Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, but a court ruling said local law enforcement cannot hold someone based solely on a civil immigration detainer.

Republicans have said they want that changed.

“I support anything to get crime off the street and to ensure the safety of our communities and our residents, that will be for the legislature to decide in terms of the Lunn Decision,” Healey said.

During the interview, Healey touted Massachusetts as among the safest states in the country, questioning why the Trump administration is also targeting undocumented immigrants who are not criminals.
