Mbappe recreates iconic Ronaldo celebration after surpassing record

Kylian Mbappe’s brace over Villarreal etched his name into the history books once more as he overtook Ronaldo’s impressive record.

Mbappe scored twice in six minutes to surpass the Brazilian legend’s tally of goals scored in a debut season with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo scored 30 goals across all competitions in his debut season with Real Madrid in 2002/03

But that record was snatched from the former striking superstar on Saturday evening as Mbappe celebrated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘I’m here’ celebration after scoring his 31st goal for Los Blancos.

And that wasn’t the only record slashed by the young French international on Saturday either.

Mbappe now has the fourth highest debut season goal tally in Real Madrid history, with 31 goals.

His brace also made it 17 goals across all competitions in 2025 so far in Europe’s top five leagues – second only to his former PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele.

Mbappe’s opening goal came 17 minutes into play with the forward pouncing on a rebound to fire it into the back of the net.

It followed Brahim Diaz’s failed chip over the keeper, which Mbappe was on hand to send home swiftly after.

Within six minutes, Mbappe was celebrating again. Lucas Vazquez received Federico Valverde’s pass on the right flank which made its way to the Frenchman.

Mbappe received a cut back pass from Vazquez to blaze it into the top corner and put Madrid ahead.

It turned the tables quickly for Madrid after they had gone 1-0 down within seven minutes through Juan Foyth’s early strike.

Foyth found the roof of the net after being unmarked from a corner to send it past Thibaut Courtois in goal.

The game finished 2-1, with Mbappe’s goals securing Real Madrid’s spot at the top of La Liga.

Mbappe’s impressive scoring in the league has not yet been enough to catch 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski though.

The Polish striker has netted 21 league goals to Mbappe’s 20, including nine in the Champions League for Barcelona.

Real Madrid are currently leading the league table in Spain’s top-flight, on 60 points ahead of Barcelona in second.

Barcelona do have two games in hand however and are close to third-placed Atletico Madrid – who Real Madrid knocked out of the Champions League earlier in the week.
