I’ve noticed several shades of green on my timeline lately, thanks to all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. But out of all the green-hued ensembles and festive celebrity content, it was Meghan Markle‘s Instagram Story that caught my eye.
To mark the holiday, the Duchess of Sussex, 43, shared pics and footage of herself preparing a St. Patty’s-themed breakfast for the family. The proud mom prepared green waffles for her husband, Prince Harry, and their two children, Archie (5) and Lilibet (3). And she used a familiar tool that royal fans will instantly recognize: A waffle maker that was gifted to her by none other than Harry’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

In Her IG Stories, the Duchess shared footage of herself mixing the green batter, then followed up with a video of herself carefully pouring it into the waffle maker. She continues to document the process as the waffle cooks, then presents the finished product, including two small plates of green waffles with fruit and whipped cream to create faces.

Markle also shared a Pinterest-worthy snap of the waffles she made for herself and Prince Harry, complete with what appears to be a green breakfast smoothie. With a green heart, she wrote, “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!”

In 2021, when Prince Harry appeared on The Late Late Show, he told James Corden about his late grandmother’s sweet gift for Archie, who happens to be a big fan of waffles. He said, “My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas and Meg said a waffle maker. She sent us a waffle maker for Archie. So [for] breakfast now, Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix in the waffle maker.”
Harry mentioned that his son was thrilled to receive the gift, adding, “Archie wakes up in the morning and goes ‘waffle.'” As for how he likes it, Harry said, “Bit of yogurt, bit of jam on top…Bit of berries, maybe honey.”
Both Harry and Markle have been quite vocal about their affection for the queen, so it comes as no surprise that the late monarch’s gift has become a go-to staple for the Sussexes. During her engagement interview with BBC in November 2017, Markle gushed, “It’s incredible, I think, to be able to meet [the queen] through [Prince Harry’s] lens, not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. She’s an incredible woman.”
