Morgan Wallen’s Abrupt Saturday Night Live Exit Was Reportedly a Mistake

Over the weekend, Morgan Wallen sparked another confusing controversy when he returned to Saturday Night Live as a musical guest, performing two singles from his upcoming album I’m the Problem. As the credits rolled, during the time a performer would normally socialize with the cast, Wallen leaned in and said something to host Mikey Madison. After giving her a one-armed side hug, he abruptly walked offstage towards the camera.

Soon after, he took to his Instagram Stories to post a photo of the private jet that was ferrying him back home with the caption, “Get me to God’s country.” Because of Wallen’s past controversy and his political commentary during the pandemic, some commenters assumed the post was directed at the SNL cast or New York City as a whole. Some later shared footage showing cast members Ego Nwodim and Kenan Thompson reacting with surprise as he walked away.

But according to a source who spoke to Variety, the incorrect exit was a mistake, and Wallen wasn’t commenting on the experience at SNL when he posted to Instagram. A source told TMZ that he entered and exited through the same way during blocking and rehearsal, so he walked that way out of habit. (Vanity Fair has reached out to Wallen’s representatives for comment.)

Wallen’s experience on the long-running comedy show has never been without controversy, and in October 2020, his original appearance on the show was canceled after footage showed him violating COVID protocols in an Alabama bar. The performance was rescheduled for December 2020, and Wallen poked fun at the mishap in a sketch where Jason Bateman and Bowen Yang played versions of the singer from the future. During Saturday night’s show, Wallen didn’t participate in any of the night’s sketches.

Though social media and a willingness to do press helped shape the singer’s rise to pop fame, he has become increasingly reticent to do interviews and walk red carpets. In November, he wasn’t present at the Country Music Association Awards to accept the award for entertainer of the year, widely considered Nashville’s most prestigious honor, and never used his social media accounts to comment on it.
