Netflix movie ‘The Twister: Caught in the Storm’ has scenes shot in Illinois

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — One of the current top movies on Netflix was partly filmed in Champaign County.

“The Twister: Caught in the Storm,” was released on March 20, and is currently the No. 2 film in the “Movies Today” category on Netflix. This Netflix original documentary shows first-hand footage and accounts of the 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri.

According to the Champaign County Film Office, several indoor reenactment and outdoor scenes were filmed in Champaign, Rantoul and Mahomet in May 2024. The documentary is rated MA and is an hour and 29 minutes in length.

“In May 2011, a massive tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri,” the Netflix description of the movie reads. “With pulse-pounding firsthand footage, this documentary goes inside a deadly twister.”
