No signs of foul play in prosecutor’s death, Alexandria police say

No evidence of foul play has turned up in the investigation into the death of a former federal prosecutor, Alexandria, Virginia, police said Tuesday.

Jessica D. Aber, 43, who had been U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in the Biden administration, was found dead Saturday in her home. She resigned in January to make way for the new administration. No cause of death has been determined.

The lack of an official explanation of her death touched off speculation and prompted conspiracy theories. But detectives have found “no evidence suggesting that her death was caused by anything other than natural causes,” police said Tuesday evening in a brief update on their investigation. They said the inquiry is continuing.

Aber apparently had suffered for a long time from a serious medical condition, according to friends.

As the chief federal prosecutor for Virginia’s Eastern District, she supervised the handling of a variety of legal matters in Northern Virginia, Richmond and the Hampton Roads region for most of Biden’s term.

She oversaw a variety of criminal cases, and dealt with sensitive issues concerning U.S. defense and intelligence agencies that are based in her district.
