Central U.S. states under siege by severe weather may not be getting a break after storms caused flash flooding and tornadoes Wednesday night.
Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee were all hit by more than a dozen twisters overnight into Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service, leaving flash flooding and devastating property damage in their wake.
At least six have died, according to USA TODAY reporting. In Tennessee, officials reported four deaths across McNairy, Obion, Hardeman and Fayette counties. Several tornadoes are believed to have hit the Selmer area of McNairy County, according to the National Weather Service, leaving thousands without power or homes to return to.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency told The Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network, that it was deploying in the hardest-hit counties of Fayette, Hardeman and McNairy on Thursday. And, amid school and road closures, more than 7,000 power outages were reported across the state as of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. That number was significantly higher overnight when the storms first hit, surpassing 15,000 around 4 a.m. local time.
As residents and officials began trying to get a handle on the storms’ toll, here’s a look at images from hard-hit areas of Tennessee.
