Brad Marchand played the hits after he was traded by the Boston Bruins last week.
Despite dealing with all of the emotions that come with leaving your hockey home of well over a decade, Marchand couldn’t help but chirp Brandon Carlo, who also was moved by the B’s before last Friday’s deadline. The Boston icon took a similar approach when he joined the group chat of the Florida Panthers, who acquired Marchand to bolster their chances of repeating as Stanley Cup champions.
“As soon as we added him in the group chat, he was chirping,” Sam Bennett told reporters Monday, per the Panthers’ Jameson Olive. “His first message with a chirp, right away. You love that. It breaks the ice. That’s just who he is, and we’re excited to have that personality here.”
Marchand figures to be a seamless fit on the ice with Florida, too, but Paul Maurice and company will have to wait to see how their most preferred lineup performs. Marchand and longtime Bruins nemesis Matthew Tkachuk both are dealing with injuries that kept them out of Florida’s matchup with Boston at TD Garden on Tuesday.
Bennett, on the other hand, suited up for the spirited showdown and made his presence felt when he dropped the gloves with hulking blueliner Nikita Zadorov. Given Marchand’s familiarity with both combatants, one has to imagine he enjoyed the scrap.
