San Diego Padres sweep Atlanta Braves in 2025 opening series

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — For just the second time ever, the San Diego Padres are 4-0 to start the 2025 season.

The Padres secured a four-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 5-0 win Sunday night to end the 2025 opening series, which also saw the debut of Nick Pivetta.

Padres rally in seventh inning to win home opener against Braves

MLB reports Pivetta was dominant in his Padres debut on Sunday, working seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, in the series finale at Petco Park.

Pivetta signed a 4-year contract with the Padres on February 17, 2025, through the 2028 season.

For the second time in franchise history, the Padres are 4-0 for the first time since 1984.

During the fourth inning in Saturday’s game, Manny Machado left the game with right calf tightness and was replaced at third base by Jose Iglesias, who also made his Padres debut, but was back and ready to play on Sunday.

The Padres host the Cleveland Guardians next on Monday, part of a 3-game series that ends Wednesday. The first 40,000 fans in attendance during Monday’s game at Petco Park will take home a Jackson Merrill bobblehead. Luis Ortiz is set to make his Guardians debut during Monday’s game.

Padres break Opening Day attendance record at Petco Park

The club’s home opener on Thursday had a record attendance of 45,568 fans, which marked the largest opening day crowd in Petco Park history, breaking the previous record set on March 30, 2014 vs. LAD.
