Series Preview: Mets Take Talents to South Beach

While the 2025 season didn’t get off to the start many hoped, it is essential to remember that the season just started. Baseball is judged on large sample sizes, and there is nowhere near enough data to make assumptions or judgments. And after all, the Mets had a pretty good season in 2024 after their brutal early-season start.

While the team did drop two of three in Houston, the bullpen was elite, allowing zero runs while striking out nine and registering a 45% ground ball percentage. They kept the team close in all three games, and while the outcome wasn’t ideal in two, like we said, there are still 159 games left to play.

Keeping this in mind, New York has an excellent opportunity to erase some potential narratives when they travel to Miami to face the Marlins this week. Despite a 3-1 start, Miami had three walk-off wins and went down to the wire with the Pittsburgh Pirates in all of them. The Mets have a great chance to get on the board with some more wins against an opponent that they, quite frankly, are much better than.

But how is this series shaping up? Without further ado, let us dive into the preview for the Mets’ second series of the 2025 season.

Pitching Matchups

Monday: David Peterson (2024 Statistics: 10-3, 2.90 ERA) vs. Cal Quantrill (2024 Statistics: 8-11, 4.93 ERA)

  • The Mets will send one of the best pitchers on their staff to the hill on Monday to start the series. In 2024, David Peterson had the best season of his career, racking up 101 strikeouts and posting a 2.90 ERA. This success could be attributed to his lower hard-hit and barrel percentage, which dropped to 30.6% and 7.3%, respectively. Whereas Peterson will look to pick up where he left off, Miami’s Cal Quantrill will look to rebound in 2025. But with his past numbers, the Mets’ lineup could get rolling against him.

Tuesday: Kodai Senga (2024 Statistics: 1-0, 3.38 ERA) vs. Sandy Alcantara (0–0, 3.86 ERA)

  • After a lost 2024 season, Kodai Senga will look to start the 2025 season on the right foot. It remains to be seen how long New York will stretch Senga out on Tuesday, but he is in a good spot to build momentum against the Marlins. However, the Mets will have their hands full with the ace of Miami’s staff, Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara, in his first start of 2025, went 4 2/3 innings, struck out seven, allowed two hits and two runs, and walked four.

Wednesday: Clay Holmes (0–1, 3.86 ERA) vs. Connor Gillispie (0–1, 5.40 ERA)

  • Clay Holmes will look to build upon his first career start when he faces off against the Marlins on Wednesday in Miami. He showed some promise with his pitches, notching four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings pitched. However, Holmes needs to limit the walks in the process, as he also issued four of them in his start. On the flip side for the Fish, Connor Gillispie will take the mound. It is yet another opportunity for the Mets’ batters to get rolling in 2025.

The Main Headline

The main headline heading into the second series of the season is that the Mets, quite frankly, need to hit better against a Marlins team they are decisively better than.

This is not to say that it is the end of the world if the Mets cannot post five or more runs a game. It is not a failure if the team does not come alive for an offensive explosion. However, Francisco Lindor and Brett Baty cannot go hitless for the entire series. Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo cannot squander multiple opportunities to drive runners in.

To put it simply, the Mets cannot hit .136 in a series. They cannot have one player carry their offensive production for the whole week again.

New York’s offense will find its way; they are simply too talented to do so. But, for the Mets to take care of business in Florida, the hitting must play to its payroll and talent level.

Prediction

As someone who has watched the New York Mets for a long time, I know their matchups against the Marlins are always competitive, especially early on in the season. The NL East rivals have had some great battles over the years, especially when they have faced off in the 305.

However, I am taking the Mets to sweep the series. Their bats will come alive and get back on track, while Peterson, Holmes, and Senga will notch their first victories of the young season. Francisco Lindor will also homer at least once in the series, while Pete Alonso will have two extra-base hits. As a result, the Mets will have a 4-2 record heading back to New York for their home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
