The NFL Draft drama has made its way to The View. On this morning’s episode of the long-running daytime talk show, co-host Ana Navarro called out “nepo baby” Shedeur Sanders, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, for being overly confident about his impending draft status.
Shedeur, who played quarterback at the University of Colorado Boulder, was projected to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft last Thursday night (April 24). But it wasn’t until Round 5 that the Cleveland Browns finally brought him onto their team, leaving many to speculate that he might’ve had “too much confidence” and was “too arrogant” heading into the draft.
The View even played a previous interview of Shedeur warning NFL teams not to pick him if they’re “not trying to change the franchise or culture.”
“You should know history repeats itself over and over and over. And I’ve done it over and over and over. So it should be no question why an NFL franchise should pick me,” he said in the interview.
“You think I’m worried about critics say or what people got to say? You know who my dad is?” he continued. “They hated on him, too. It’s almost normal. Without people hating, it’s not normal for us. We like adversity. We like everything that comes with the name. That’s why we are who we are.”
For Navarro — who admittedly doesn’t keep up with sports — Shedeur’s remarks made him sound “privileged” and “entitled.”
“First of all, anytime you start a sentence with, ‘You know who my father is?’ it tells the world that you are a nepo baby and they come in every gender, color, and ethnicity,” she said. “I think that comes with red flags. It feels entitled. It feels privileged.”
However, Navarro also didn’t think it was fair for the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s son to prank call Shedeur pretending to be the general manager for the New Orleans Saints, a team that was believed to have interest in the football player.
“That’s pretty horrible. I think that if we’re gonna talk about one kid being entitled, we need to talk about the other kid being entitled,” she said. “Honestly, I don’t know what the consequences are, but there should be some consequences.”
Sunny Hostin, on the other hand, praised Shedeur’s “incredible talent” and predicted that he would be a “game changer” for the Cleveland Browns.
“Quarterbacks do tend to be leaders. They lead their team. I haven’t met a quarterback that isn’t confident,” she said. “What I don’t like about the narrative is, I don’t like that people are conflating arrogance with confidence. I don’t understand why he has to dim his light to make other people feel a little more comfortable. “
“His father coached him to be great. I tell my own children, who I’m sure people call nepo babies, ‘You belong in all spaces. That is not to say you’re arrogant. It means you belong,’” Hostin said, to which Navarro replied, “But do they begin a sentence with, ‘Do you know who my mother is?’”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
