‘The White Lotus’ Star Leslie Bibb Thinks Sam Rockwell’s Shocking Monologue Is What Mike White Is ‘Really Trying to Talk About’ | Video

Spoilers ahead for “The White Lotus” Season 3, Episode 5.

Fans of “The White Lotus” are likely still processing Sam Rockwell’s big monologue in Episode 5. But Rockwell’s partner and fellow “White Lotus” star Leslie Bibb thinks there’s another reason why viewers should be paying close attention to his “unapologetic” appearance.

“I remember when I read all eight [episodes], and I remember when I got to this monologue and this scene,” Bibb said on “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday. “I remember thinking I had never seen anything like this before on television, and I felt like it was what Mike [White] was really trying to talk about for the show.”

She also noted that some of the big themes this season include spirituality, death, doppelgängers and mirrors.

In “Full-Moon Party,” the despondent Rick (Walton Goggins) reunites with his friend Frank (Rockwell). Initially, Rick is surprised to see that his once hard-partying drinking buddy is now sober. But as Frank describes his life in Thailand, his sobriety becomes the least shocking part of his journey.

Frank explains that when he first came to Thailand, he lost control of his sex addiction. But the more he slept around with women of all ages and body types, the more he noticed the deep melancholy he felt. Eventually, he asked himself “maybe, what I really want is to be one of these Asian girls.” That sparked a new era of Frank’s sex addiction where he had sex with men who resembled him while he imagined himself as an Asian woman. However, even that came to feel hollow for Frank. By the time he reunites with Rick, Frank has turned away from most indulgences to focus instead on Buddhism.

Bibb admitted that she hasn’t actually seen the episode. But Frank’s intense vulnerability spoke to her and served, in her eyes, as a major driver of this season. She also noted that if her character Kate and her two friends were more honest, the series would be far different.

“I feel like if the women had just come in and done what Frank did and been like, ‘Hey, this is what’s happening in my life. I’m having problems in my marriage. I’m drinking too much. I’m doing this’ — whatever — they wouldn’t be gossiping about each other,” the actress said. “They would immediately put the shield down, they would be vulnerable.” Watch the full interview above.

“The White Lotus” airs Sundays on HBO and Max.
