Elon Musk will “stay for a certain period of time” at the White House but is “going to want to get back to his business” after directing DOGE, President Trump told reporters Thursday.
The big picture: Trump’s comments mark the first time he’s provided a loose end date for the departure of SpaceX and Tesla CEO Musk.
- The president has so far largely refrained from providing departure details about his friend and adviser, a “special government employee” who can only work 130 days per year.
Driving the news: Musk is “going to want to get back to his business,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “Then the secretaries will take totally over.”
- Trump was not specific but said Musk would move on “in a few months.” The president added, “We’re in no rush.”
Zoom out: Vice President Vance said earlier Thursday that Musk will remain a “friend and an adviser” to the White House and called reports the CEO would leave the administration imminently “fake news.”
