Updated Big Ten men’s basketball tournament bracket, schedule after first round games

The first round of the 2025 Big Ten Tournament is complete.

No. 12 Minnesota and No. 13 Northwestern met to begin the day. Wildcats forward Nick Martinelli was the story of the game, with 28 points and seven rebounds on 12-of-22 shooting. Despite Northwestern entering the postseason without top guards Brooks Barnhizer (17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds per game) and Jalen Leach (14.3 points per game), it had little trouble controlling the tempo against the Gophers. Northwestern triumphed 72-64. It now moves on to play No. 5 Wisconsin on Thursday.

Next, No. 15 Iowa continued its recent surge with a 77-70 win over No. 10 Ohio State. Payton Sandfort led the way for the Hawkeyes with 17 points, while shooting guard Brock Harding added a critical 15 points off the bench. The BuckeyesNCAA Tournament life may have been at stake, as they were listed in the ‘Last Four In’ of most bracket projections entering the conference tournament. Iowa moves on to face No. 7 Illinois in the second round.

Finally, in the nightcap, No. 11 Rutgers and No. 14 USC played a double-overtime thriller. Despite 27 points, eight rebounds and eight assists from Rutgers star freshman Dylan Harper, plus 17 points and seven rebounds from Ace Bailey, the Trojans escaped with a 97-89 triumph. Desmond Claude led the way for Eric Musselman’s team, totaling 28 points and eight assists. USC now advances to face No. 6 Purdue.

Note: Michigan State (17-3 Big Ten), Maryland (14-6), Michigan (14-6) and UCLA (13-7) received double-byes in the tournament, seeded No. 1 to No. 4 in order. Nebraska (7-13), Penn State (6-14) and Washington (4-15) missed the field entirely.

  • Game 6: No. 7 Illinois vs. No. 15 Iowa — 6:30 p.m. ET on BTN
  • Game 7: No. 6 Purdue vs. No. 14 USC — 25 minutes after Game 6 on BTN

Quarterfinals (Friday)

  • Game 8: No. 1 Michigan State vs. Oregon/Indiana — noon ET on BTN
  • Game 9: No. 4 UCLA vs. Wisconsin/Northwestern — 25 minutes after Game 8 on BTN

Semifinals (Saturday)

The final will precede CBS’ NCAA Tournament selection show, where Wisconsin will officially receive its seed and location for next weekend’s action.
