The USMNT failed. In the teams first competitive match under Mauricio Pochettino the team dominated posession but failed to break down the Panamanian picked up their second win of 2025, 3-0 over Costa Rica and their new manager Miguel Herer low block, failed to score, and failed to come away with the victory needed to advance to the championship match. The defense didn’t look sharp either, several times making simple situations more difficult for themselves that seemed necessary, and the only shot that Panama put on goal last night made it past keeper Matt Turner, increasing concerns that his limited playing time for club will, and is, impacting his effectiveness as the USMNT keeper. It’s no surprise that Turner is the lowest rated player of the match, coming in just under 3.5, and it appears that the Pochettino honeymoon has worn off as the coach was the lowest rated individual overall with a 3.38. Seven of the eleven starters rated lower than a 5.0 as did all the substitutes. Three additional players scored in the fives, middling scores themselves, and just one player managed to break the 6.0 threshold.
In his first match under Pochettino he once again showed his ability to cover ground like no other player in the pool and he once again showed his importance to the team: Tyler Adams was named your SSFC Man of the Match with a 6.21 score. If his blast in the final seconds of regulation had found the frame we would likely be having a different discussion for the entire team. However, like the rest of the match, it was a bit off and came up short.
