Washington women see season end in First Four NCAA tournament game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Elle Ladine sank two improbable three-pointers in the final minute that gave the No. 11 seed Washington women’s basketball team a chance to extend the game and their season.

Down three points with 12 seconds left, UW coach Tina Langley called timeout and drew up a play on the sideline for Ladine, who curled off a screen and got a good look at the basket.

However, her three-point attempt sailed long and hit the backside of the rim.

After No. 11 seed Columbia missed a couple of free throws, the Huskies’ season came to an end when Ladine’s full-court heave fell short on a 63-60 loss in Thursday’s First Four NCAA tournament game at Carmichael Arena.

The Huskies had control and a 13-point lead early in the third quarter before losing their grip and succumbing to a fourth-quarter scoring onslaught from Lions sharpshooter Riley Weiss.

Washington, which entered the game ranked 11th nationally while shooting 37.3% on three-pointers, converted 3 of 13 shots behind the arc.

The Huskies will also lament their 3-for-10 shooting on free throws and 15 turnovers that led to 20 points.

Ladine finished with 16 points while sophomore guard Sayvia Sellers had team-high 21 points, three rebounds and six assists.

It’s a bitter end for fifth-year forward Dalayah Daniels, the former Garfield High star who spent two years at California before returning home and transferring to Washington.

In her final game and first NCAA tournament game, Daniels did a little bit of everything while tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Early on, Washington had little difficulty breaking Columbia’s full-court press while racing out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter. The Huskies converted 10 of its first 16 shots while holding the Lions to 5-for-15 shooting from the field, including 0 for 9 on three-pointers.

Daniels, a 6-foot-4 agile forward, towered over the Lions and dominated inside while leading UW to a 34-21 lead at halftime.

Before the first half ended, Sellers snagged a long rebound and spotted Daniels streaking down the middle of the floor before floating a pass over a defender that hit Daniels in stride.

The delivery allowed Daniels to feather in a layup off the glass before the defense could react and cap the first-half scoring.

In the second half, Washington committed a slew of turnovers and fouls that allowed Columbia to cut its deficit to 43-40 with a minute left in the third quarter.

Ladine mishandled a pass for Sellers at midcourt that led to a turnover and fast break layup for Lions guard Kitty Henderson. Langley called timeout and Sellers drove for a layup on the next possession to give Washington a 45-40 heading to the fourth.

Momentum turned when Sellers fouled Weiss after she made a three-pointer and canned the ensuing free throw to cut UW’s lead to 45-44.

Minutes later, Weiss drained a trey that gave Columbia its first lead at 47-45 with 7:47 left.

Soon after, Weiss did it again and knocked down a three-pointer over Hannah Stines that put the Lions up 52-47.

Weiss scored a game-high 24 points for Columbia, which moves on to face No. 6 seed West Virginia in the first round on Saturday.

Down 59-54, Ladine sank a three-pointer that caromed off the back of the rim and bounced high over the backboard before falling in.

Washington trailed 61-57 when Ladine hit another trey to close the gap to 61-60 with 13.5 seconds left.
