Weather Alert Day: Storms may turn severe in West Michigan Sunday afternoon

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — An unseasonably mild day is expected on Sunday as temperatures rise into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Mild temperatures, combined with plenty of moisture and wind shear, will create an environment for strong to severe storms to develop.

The Storm Prediction Center has most of West Michigan under an Enhanced (3/5) Risk for severe thunderstorms while areas further north are under a Slight (2/5) Risk for severe storms.

However, a tornado watch was issued Sunday afternoon for Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph and Branch Counties through 8 p.m.

Our window of opportunity to see any severe thunderstorms develop is between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday.

Storms will impact areas southwest of Kalamazoo first and move northeast through the region.

The greatest threat with any severe thunderstorms will be damaging wind gusts. Large hail is possible and a brief spin up tornado cannot be ruled out.

Wind remains the biggest threat in severe storms on Sunday, but the potential for a tornado or two is also there. We may see a severe thunderstorm watch rolled out elsewhere still in the coming hours.

If we see breaks in the clouds and some sunshine early Sunday afternoon, that could enhance our risk for severe thunderstorms.

Once the storms pass on Sunday evening, cold air will come racing in.

Low temperatures are expected to drop into the middle 30s by Monday morning, with a mixture of rain and snow showers.
