What’s closed on Good Friday? Are banks open and is USPS delivering mail today?

Good Friday is not one of the federal holidays, but it is a public holiday for some states and there will be lots of closures today.

The Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will be closed, but most banks will be open for regular business hours. Most schools are off for Good Friday and the Easter weekend break, but not all.

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which according to Christian belief, is seen as a sacrifice that atones for the sins of humanity. While the day is a somber one, it is also considered ‘good’ because it leads to the hope and joy of Easter Sunday where the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated, signifying victory over death.

Although it’s not a federal holiday, Good Friday is recognized as a state public holiday in states such as Delaware and New Jersey, so state government offices and courts are closed, as may some other businesses and local government services such as trash pick-up.

Most major retailers and restaurants are expected to be open for business as usual.

The U.S. Postal Service facilities will have normal operations and mail will be delivered as usual, as is UPS and FedEx services.

Unlike many other holidays, the Easter holiday dates change every year. It can be as early as March 22 or as late as April 25, which means the Lenten period and Good Friday also change.
