Although Good Friday is observed by millions each year as one of the most significant days in the Christian religion, it is not a national federally observed holiday.
Many businesses and institutions acknowledge the day’s religious significance in different ways, with some choosing to reduce hours or close entirely. However, because it’s not a federal holiday, operations often vary by region, employer or denomination.

Why is Good Friday celebrated?
Good Friday is celebrated on the Friday before Easter and marks the day Jesus was crucified and died. This year, it is observed on April 18, 2025.
Are liquor stores open on Good Friday in Texas?
Although Good Friday is a somber day, liquor stores remain open. In addition to Sundays, liquor sales are only prohibited on three holidays each year: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Liquor stores are allowed to sell alcohol from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, including Good Friday.
Retail stores that don’t sell liquor, such as grocery and convenience stores, have different hours for beer and wine sales:
- Monday through Friday: 7 a.m. to midnight
- Saturday: 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. (Sunday)
- Sunday: 10 a.m. to midnight
Bars and restaurants follow a similar schedule. However, on Sundays, they can only serve alcohol from 10 a.m. to noon if paired with food. If no food is ordered, alcohol sales can begin at noon.

Since Good Friday is not an official federal holiday, financial institutions and postal services will operate as usual.
