Yahoo Sports national MLB insider Russell Dorsey comments on the wide ‘overreaction’ to new bat technology being utilized throughout Major League Baseball.
Guys, it’s time we talk about torpedo bats, and no, I’m not here to tell you that they’re bad.
Actually, I’m here to tell you we’re overreacting.
People have been making adjustments and customizations to bats for decades, usually to the handle, but some guys changed the weight, the length, all within the guidelines and rules of Major League Baseball.
No, this isn’t some cheat code, and talking to players around Major League Baseball, the refrain is the same.
It’s the guy that makes the difference, not the bat.
For example, Eli Lela Cruz has been using the new torpedo bats and has hit a couple monster home runs.
The problem is, Ellie de la Cruz was hitting monster home runs without the torpedo bat.
The problem is, what’s gonna happen?
We’re gonna look at torpedo bats and every time a guy hits a home run or every time a team has a monster game, we’re gonna look at torpedo bats as being the difference.
When the reality is, these are really good baseball players.
So we’re gonna have to settle down.
There’s not nearly enough data to show that torpedo bats make the difference between a team’s run production or home run production.
And this is gonna be have to be something we watch over a full season, not over a couple of games.
So let’s take a deep breath and calm down because torpedo bats aren’t the cheat code that you think they are.
